Few pieces of jewellery carry as much meaning as a silver payal. For generations, Indian women have worn silver on their feet. It marks festivals, weddings and everyday life, and the soft chime of the bells announces a presence before a word is spoken.
At Sangeeta Boochra, we have been crafting silver in Jaipur since 1897. Here is our guide to choosing a silver payal you will wear for years.
Why silver, and not gold, on the feet?
Tradition holds that gold is not worn below the waist. Silver became the metal of choice for payals and toe rings. Silver also feels cool against the skin, which suits the Indian climate. It suits every skin tone, from fair to deep.
Types of silver payal for women
• Classic ghungroo payal: Rows of tiny bells that chime with every step. Ideal for festivals, weddings and dance.
• Boho anklet: Free-spirited, layered designs with flowers, charms and beads. These pair well with both ethnic and western outfits.
• Minimal chain anklet: A fine, single-strand design for daily wear and office wear.
• Bridal payal: Broad, heavy and intricately worked, often with layered drops. Made to be noticed under a lehenga.

How to choose the right silver payal
1. Check the purity. Look for 925 sterling silver. It is 92.5% pure silver, strong enough to hold intricate work and bright enough to last. Avoid “German silver”, which contains no silver at all.
2. Get the length right. Most anklets measure 10 to 11 inches. An adjustable fit lets the payal rest just above the ankle bone without slipping onto the foot.
3. Match the weight to the occasion. Choose light designs for daily wear and heavier, layered designs for weddings and festivals.
4. Feel the edges. Handcrafted payals should have smooth links and closed hooks so they don’t snag on sarees or skin.
How to style your silver payal
• With a saree or lehenga: go for a broad ghungroo or bridal payal, and add matching silver toe rings.
• With palazzos or a kurta set: a boho anklet adds movement and charm.
• With western wear: wear a single minimal anklet with flats or heels.
Caring for your silver anklets
Anklets meet water, dust and floors more than any other jewellery. Wipe them with a soft cloth after wear. Remove them before bathing or swimming. Store each payal in a zip pouch to slow tarnishing. Clean with mild soap water if needed, and dry fully before storing.
A payal that becomes an heirloom
A good silver payal is not a one-season buy. Many families pass them from mother to daughter. Explore our handcrafted silver payal for women and find the pair that will carry your story forward.
